If you, as an EU citizen, intend to stay in the country for more than 3 months and you have not threatened national security or seriously disrupted public order, you can file an application for a certificate of temporary residence of an EU citizen.

Obtaining this certificate is not a prerequisite for your stay in the territory of the Czech Republic; this is why it is up to you to decide whether you will apply for it or not.

You are an EU citizen, you wish to stay in the territory of the Czech Republic for more than three months; you can file an application for a certificate of temporary residence of an EU citizen. However, a certificate of temporary residence is not a requirement for the stay of an EU citizen in the territory of the Czech Republic.

An application for a certificate of temporary residence is to be filed as a duly filled out application form. The forms are available on the Information Portal for Foreigners. 

The documents required to be enclosed with the application*:

• the travel document (i.e. also the identity card of the EU citizen);
• the document confirming the purpose of the stay, if it is employment, business or another gainful activity or studies;
• 1 photograph;
• proof of medical insurance (this is not required, if the purpose of the stay is employment, business or another gainful activity);
• proof of accommodation in the territory of the Czech Republic.

*The documents required to be enclosed with the application must not be older than 180 days, with the exception of the travel document, the vital records certificate and the applicant’s photograph, as long as it corresponds to their actual appearance. It is always necessary to submit the originals or officially authenticated copies of the documents. As for the travel document and the vital records documents, their originals must be submitted.

The application form, along with the appropriate documents, is to be filed at that office of the Department for Asylum and Migration Policy of the MOI (DAMP MOI), which is responsible for the district where your place of residence is situated. 

Alternatively, you can send your filled out application form, along with the documents, in accordance with the Rules of Administrative Procedure by mail to the official contacts of the MOI or directly to the office of DAMP MOI. It is always necessary to submit the originals or officially authenticated copies of the documents.  

In this case, it is possible to send a simple copy of the travel document; if your application is granted, you will submit the original of the travel document at the time when the certificate of temporary residence is issued to you.

Jaký má služba benefit

You will receive a certificate of temporary residence of an EU citizen, which is issued with a validity period of 10 years. The validity of the certificate of temporary residence cannot be extended. After approval of the application for the issuance of a certificate of temporary residence, you will be automatically asked for a birth number and after providing the birth number, the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic will assign it to you (if you have not already been assigned a birth number, including citizens of the Slovak Republic born before 1993).

Možnosti odvolání

You can appeal against the decision within 15 days of the delivery of the decision. You can file the appeal in person or send it by mail (or electronically) to the given office of the MOI CR or to the head office of the MOI.
