Main information
In order to receive health services in another Member State, one of the three basic entitlement documents is used, depending on the purpose of the stay and the type of care:
- The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), or a certificate that temporarily replaces it, is used to receive the necessary healthcare during a temporary stay, such as during holidays, studies or business trips.
- Document S1 is intended for persons who are insured in one State but live in another. Once registered, they are entitled to healthcare in the State of residence under the conditions applicable to local insured persons.
- Document S2 represents the prior authorisation of a health insurance company to receive specific planned health care in another state. It is necessary to obtain it before traveling for this care.
- All these documents are issued by your health insurance company
- The specific document depends on whether you are staying abroad only temporarily, whether you live there or whether you are travelling there for planned healthcare.
