Institutional care in the health service

In Czechia, institutional care is primarily provided as a social service; in the health service, it is only possible in the case of placement of a child under 3 years of age in a children's home for children under 3 years of age. However, this form of institutional care is in decline and is usually provided only for short periods for children who have a serious health problem that prevents them from returning to the home environment, or to foster care or adoption.

Residential services for senior citizens and the disabled are focused on residential social services. Health care is also provided as part of these services, but not always. If a client of residential social services needs medical care and is insured in Czechia, then these medical services are covered by health insurance. No fees are payable by social care clients.

In cases where the medical services are provided in such institues of social care, the provider of medical services has to have an authorisation to provide medical services in such institute of social care, issued by the local competent administrative authority. In such cases, the provision of medical services is covered by general health insurence scheme.

The abovementioned rules are applicable to healthcare of children situated in orphanages as well.
