Transmission of cave documentation found during mining or geological work

Main information

As a person authorised to extract minerals, you are obliged to ensure the documentation of the identified cave and hand it over to the competent nature protection authority.

This obligation arises if the existence of the cave has been established during the extraction of minerals or during geological work and is directly linked to the obligation to report the existence of the cave.

In the case of a previously discovered cave, which you discovered during the extraction of minerals or during geological work, the nature protection authority may state that the existing documentation is sufficient in some questions and may wish only to supplement the documentation.

Therefore, always comply with the reporting obligation of the nature protection authority before creating the documentation.

This applies to you if

When extracting minerals or carrying out geological works, you will find out the existence of a cave.

When to use this service

At any time during the year when the cave is discovered during the extraction of minerals or when carrying out geological work.

What you need if you are using this service

You must submit the cave documentation to the nature protection authority so that it meets at least the following scope:

  1. Basic Cave Identification Data:
    • cave name, synonyms and registration number according to the Unified Register of Speleological Objects maintained by the Nature Conservation Agency (if assigned),
    • type of cavity (for example, cave, chasm, chimney),
    • detailed location of the entrance(s) including S-JTSK coordinates,
    • the altitude of the entrance(s) in the Bpv system;
    • relative height of entrance(s) above the comparative level (e.g. above valley bottom, river, initial quarry),
    • the name of the extraction area and the bearing,
    • the cadastral area and the local name of the site,
    • date and method of eventual disposal of the cave (e.g. extraction, swamping) or its further use.
  2. Basic characteristics of the cave, including data on:
    • the type and character of the cave (for example, horizontal, corridor, hall, dome, fissure chasm, chimney),
    • the morphology of the cave,
    • the length, depth and elevation of the cave,
    • geological conditions,
    • hydrological function (e.g. water status, flow, temperature and water composition),
    • sedimentary and mineral fillers,
    • paleontological, archaeological or historical findings,
    • microclimatic conditions (e.g. drafts, temperature, humidity and air composition),
    • the biological significance of the cave (e.g. findings of bat colonies, invertebrates, fungi);
    • other significant natural phenomena (e.g. gas ejections),
    • the prerequisites for the further continuation of the cave premises and the prospects for related discoveries,
    • static conditions of the cave, possibilities of its preservation, further use or method of disposal,
    • other protective conditions resulting from special legislation) (e.g. protection zones of baths, linear structures),
    • the date and circumstances of discoveries and surveys,
    • the survey and documentation methods used,
    • literature and supporting documents used,
    • the name and surname of the processor and the date of processing of the documentation; and
    • signature of the processor.
  3. Measuring documentation:
    • surface map indicating the projection of the cave (for example, a copy of the basic map of the quarry under special legislation,
    • speleological map of the cave in scale 1 : 100,
    • Profiles and cuts at scale 1 : 100,
    • a technical report on the surveying work carried out, indicating the accuracy achieved,
    • list of coordinates of the points of the base point field.
  4. Photographic documentation:
    • color images of the original state of the cave and changes in the state of the cave caused by mining (e.g. morphology, karst fillings) in electronic form.
  5. Annex:
    • natural samples taken (mountains, minerals, paleontological findings, etc.).

The application does not have a prescribed form, so it is written in free form.

Where and how to solve this service

You can hand over the cave documentation in person or send it by post to the locally competent nature protection authority in whose territorial district you discovered the cave. If the cave is not located in any of the specially protected areas listed below, this authority is the regional authority.

This does not apply if the cave is located in one of the following territories:

National parks and their protection zones - here you submit the documentation to the National Park Administration:

  • here is the contact to the National Park Administration Czech Switzerland
  • here is the contact to the Administration of the Krkonoše National Park
  • here is the contact to the Podyjí National Park Administration
  • here is the contact to the Šumava National Park Administration

Protected landscape areas - here you submit the documentation to the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic, or to its regional office. This interactive map displays the contacts of the relevant regional workplace by clicking on the affected part of the territory.

National natural monuments, national nature reserves and their protection zones - here you submit the documentation to the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic, or its regional workplace. This interactive map displays the contacts of the relevant regional workplace by clicking on the affected part of the territory.

Nature reserves and natural monuments and their protection zones (outside the Protected Landscape Area – PLA) – here you submit the documentation to the Regional Authority. Contacts for individual regional authorities can be found on the Public Administration Portal.

Nature reserves and natural monuments and their protection zones (in the Protected Landscape Area – PLA) – here you submit the documentation to the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic, or its regional office. • as a natural person, penalties of up to CZK 20 000,
  • as a legal and entrepreneurial natural person up to CZK 1 million.

Frequently asked questions

Who can process the cave documentation?

A natural or legal person with the necessary qualifications for speleology.

This is mostly the Basic Organization of the Czech Society of Speleology or a member of the Institute of Geology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.
