Request for postponement of compulsory education

The headmaster shall postpone the start of compulsory schooling by 1 school year if:

• the child’s state of health does not allow his or her participation in teaching for a long time and
• this is substantiated by a recommended assessment of the relevant school counselling facility, and a specialist doctor or clinical psychologist.

The start of compulsory schooling can only be postponed once.

This applies to you if

You are a parent of a child over the age of five who must go to compulsory primary school enrolment.

In the case of a positive recommendation assessment of a school counselling facility (pedagogical-psychological counselling centre or special pedagogical centre) and at the same time a specialist doctor or clinical psychologist, it is possible to request a postponement of compulsory school attendance.

What you need if you are using this service

An application must be made for the postponement of compulsory primary education, which includes the recommendation of a school counselling establishment and the opinion of a specialist or a clinical psychologist.

There is no central form, sometimes schools have their own forms on their websites.

There are no requirements for the application, it depends on the agreement with the headmaster of the school. After examining the application, the headmaster of the school shall issue a decision granting or rejecting the application.

The recommended assessment of the school counselling establishment and the specialist or clinical psychologist shall be annexed to the application.

The application can be submitted by post to the address of the school or in person.

The catchment elementary school is determined by a city/municipality decree.

Appeal options

An appeal against the rejection of an application for postponement of compulsory school attendance is filed through the school with the regional authority or the City of Prague competent according to the seat of the school.
