Main information
If, before studying at a tertiary vocational school, you completed some previous education and hold an official document proving it, the director of the tertiary vocational school may recognise this education. This may exempt you from repeating a subject or even an entire year of study.
In terms of content, previous education may be categorised as either complete education or partial education.
- Complete education usually refers to successfully completed studies at a tertiary vocational school or a higher education institution in the Czech Republic or abroad, proven by an official document confirming completion (e.g. absolutorium certificate, university diploma), or by other verifiable means.
- Partial education may include, for example, completion of only some years at another tertiary vocational school or higher education institution, in the Czech Republic or abroad, or other forms of education, especially professional courses or language school studies.
If, in your application to the director of the tertiary vocational school, you submit reliable documentation (e.g. an absolutorium certificate) proving that you have obtained complete education, the director should recognise it, because there is a legal entitlement to recognition of complete education.
In practical terms, this means that the director will always exempt the student from attending and being assessed in those subjects (or parts of subjects) whose content and scope are identical to those already completed and currently being studied.
This exemption applies only to education itself – attendance and continuous assessment – and does not apply to the final examination (absolutorium).
Since the documents proving complete education have permanent validity, no time limit applies to the right to recognition of complete education.
In the case of partial education, it is at the discretion of the director whether, and to what extent, this partial education (based on assessment of its content and scope) will be recognised within your studies at the tertiary vocational school.
There is no legal entitlement to recognition of partial education.
Its sufficiency for recognition is assessed by the director, based either on documentation proving the education completed within the last 10 years, or on a school-set examination.
The director may recognise education relating only to certain subjects or only to certain years completed at another tertiary vocational school (including foreign institutions), or in another field of tertiary vocational education, a conservatoire, a higher education institution, or in the form of other education, such as professional courses or language school studies.
This applies to you if
- You are a student of a tertiary vocational school.
- You have completed comparable studies or courses.
- You wish to have them recognised as partial or complete education at a tertiary vocational school.
