Entitlement documents to receive healthcare

Main information

• If you need essential medical care during your temporary stay in another country (illness, accident), you are required to show your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a certificate that temporarily replaces it to a doctor. These documents can be obtained from your health insurance company.

• The following health insurance companies currently operate in the Czech Republic:

Všeobecná zdravotní pojišťovna České republiky,

as well as the 6 following employee insurance companies:

• Vojenská zdravotní pojišťovna České republiky,
• Česká průmyslová zdravotní pojišťovna,
• Oborová zdravotní pojišťovna zaměstnanců bank, pojišťoven a stavebnictví,
• Zaměstnanecká pojišťovna Škoda,
• Zdravotní pojišťovna ministerstva vnitra České republiky,
• Revírní bratrská pokladna, zdravotní pojišťovna.
• If you live outside your country of insurance, you must first request your health insurer to issue an S1 claim document and then register with the public health insurer in your country of residence.
• With prior approval from your health insurer (document S2), you can travel for specific planned healthcare  

You are entitled to the consent of your health insurer for care that is covered in the Czech Republic and cannot be provided in the Czech Republic without undue delay. In other cases, consent is at the discretion of the health insurer.

In this case, the confirmation of consent (document S2) must first be registered with the local health insurance authority

This applies to you if

you travel abroad and receive emergency healthcare (EHIC).

you travel abroad and receive planned care (document S2).

you live in another Member State and your state of insurance is the Czech Republic (S1 document).

At the branches of the relevant health insurance company. The required documents may vary between health insurance companies. The staff of the insurance companies will inform you about the procedure for completing the relevant documents.
