Permission to repeat a year of secondary school

Main information

A pupil who has completed compulsory schooling (i.e. all pupils in four-year secondary education) and does not benefit at the end of the second semester ceases to be a pupil of the school on the last day of the relevant school year (31.8.), unless authorised by the headmaster of the school to repeat the year.

This also applies to a pupil who did not have enough marks in a specific subject for evaluation (mostly due to prolonged or repeated absence from school) and could not be evaluated even on an alternative date.

A pupil will not benefit in the relevant year even if he/she does not benefit in the first semester from subjects that are taught only in the first semester.

A student who does not benefit from a maximum of two subjects at the end of the second semester has the right to take a corrective examination of these subjects. The corrective examination must be held for the second semester by 31 August of the school year in which the pupil failed.
A year cannot be repeated by a student who has benefited.
There is no legal right to repeat the year. If the school principal does not allow the pupil to repeat the year, the pupil of the school until the day following the date on which the decision of the school principal not to allow the repetition of the year becomes final. If the school principal allows the pupil to repeat the year, the pupil is a continuous pupil of the school.

This applies to you if

  1. You have failed (forfeited) a course taught in the second semester or the first semester in a course taught only in the first semester.
  2. You have not passed a corrective exam.
  3. You want to continue your education in secondary school.

When to use this service

You can solve the service if you do not benefit at the end of any year of high school.

If you have failed/forfeited more than two subjects, you must submit your application by the time you are a school pupil, i.e. by the end of the school year (31.8.).

If you are taking a corrective exam after 31 August, you must submit an application on the day on which the corrective exam is not taken, as the following day you are no longer a school pupil and the application can only be submitted by a person who is a school pupil.

Until the decision of the school headmaster to allow or not to allow the repetition of the year becomes final, you remain a pupil of the school.
