Main information

The parental allowance is a benefit for parents whereby they can personally provide proper and full-time care for the youngest child in the family, a child under 4 years of age, for an entire calendar month.

A parent can choose the monthly amount of the parental allowance. The choice of the amount of parental allowance can be changed once every 3 months.

For the purpose of choosing the monthly amount of the parental allowance, the daily basis of assessment for determining the maternity or sickness benefit in connection with the birth or adoption of a child is decisive, if this can be determined for at least one of the parents.
The parents’ income is not monitored for this benefit. Parents can improve the family’s social situation through gainful employment during the period they are entitled to the parental allowance. However, another adult must take care of the child while they are gainfully employed or studying.

What you need if you are using this service

When submitting your application, you need to fill in the Parental Allowance Application form.

Please attach to the application:

  1. The identity card for all listed persons or the birth certificate for children under 15 years of age or if the identity card does not state the maiden name.
  2. Confirmation of entitlement to benefits (compensation) affecting entitlement to and the amount of parental allowance.
    • This confirmation does not need to be provided by a parent who has received the birth grant from the Czech Social Security Administration and wishes to use their daily basis of assessment to determine the monthly parental allowance amount. The daily basis of assessment will be set automatically.
    • Confirmation only needs to be provided by:
      • a parent who has received sickness benefits in connection with childbirth, provided by the Czech Social Security Administration (meaning a parent not entitled to maternity benefit but only to sickness benefits).
      • a parent who has received the maternity benefit from a competent health insurance body other than the Czech Social Security Administration.
  3. Confirmation of the daily basis of assessment affecting the parental allowance amount, provided by a parent who has not received the maternity benefit but for whom a daily basis of assessment can be set and used to choose the parental allowance amount in the case of choosing a benefit amount:
    • exceeding CZK 15 000 or
    • exceeding CZK 22 500 when applying for a parental allowance for two or more children born at the same time.
  4. Confirmation of attendance at a crèche, nursery school or other similar facility for pre-school children for a child or children born at the same time under 2 years of age if they attend such a facility.
  5. Proof of entitlement to and the amount of a benefit similar to the parental allowance received in a different country, if you have received or are receiving it.
  6. Additional information about jointly assessed persons for the purposes of payment of benefits in the EU, if one of the jointly assessed persons does not reside in the Czech Republic or has an employment or other connection with another EU Member State.

Where and how to solve this service

You may file your application for the parental allowance via the Integrated Portal of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.

You can fill in the form and the individual annexes separately on the website of the labour office – the online form and form annexes separately – and send each one separately. Alternatively, you can fill them in as one online form with annexes, where you progressively fill in the form and the relevant annexes, which will all be sent electronically as one submission.

What is the benefit of this service

This is a benefit that helps you cover the costs of full-time care for the youngest child in the family, aged 4 or under.

Appeal options

If you are not satisfied with the outcome of the parental allowance procedure, you can appeal against the decision within 15 days of receiving that decision.

Submit your appeal with the regional branch of the Labour Office of the Czech Republic that decided on the benefit.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs will then decide on your appeal.
