Repeating a year at secondary school

A pupil who has fulfilled mandatory school attendance (in four-year secondary education, this means all pupils) and fails to pass at the end of the second semester ceases to be a pupil on the last day of the school year (31 August), unless they are allowed to repeat a year by the principal. This also applies to a pupil who did not have sufficient grades in a particular subject for assessment (usually due to prolonged or repeated absence from school) and could not be assessed even by the alternative deadline. 

A pupil shall fail in the relevant year even if they fail in the first semester in subjects that are taught only in the first semester. 

A student who fails no more than two subjects at the end of the second semester is entitled to take a corrective examination in those subjects. The corrective examination for the second semester must be taken by August 31 of the school year in which the student failed.

A year cannot be repeated by a student who has passed.

There is no legal right to repeat a year. If the principal does not allow the pupil to repeat the year, the pupil shall remain a pupil of the school until the day after the day on which the principal's decision not to allow the pupil to repeat the year becomes final. If the school principal allows a pupil to repeat a year, the pupil is continuously a pupil of the school.

This applies to you if you have failed in a subject taught in the second semester, or in the first semester in a subject taught only in the first semester, if you have not taken a corrective examination and you wish to continue your education at secondary school.

You can request the service if you do not pass at the end of any year of secondary school.

If you have failed more than two subjects, you must apply as long as you are a student at the school, i.e. by the end of the school year (31 August).

If you are taking a corrective examination after 31 August, you must apply on the day when you fail the corrective examination, as you are no longer a pupil of the school on the following day and only a person who is a pupil of the school can apply.

You remain a pupil of the school until the principal's decision on whether or not to allow you to repeat the year becomes final.

You must apply to the principal to repeat the year while you are a pupil at the school. There is no central form, sometimes schools have their own forms on their websites.

If the student is a minor, the application is submitted by the student's legal guardian.

The request does not have to state any reasons, but it is advisable to state the circumstances in favour of the request.

Možnosti odvolání

Appeals against the rejection of a request to repeat a grade are decided by the regional authority or the Prague City Council, depending on the location of the secondary school. The appeal shall be made through the principal of the school that did not allow the student to repeat the grade.
