Main information
A civil registry document (birth, marriage or death certificate and a registered partnership document) is issued by the civil registry office in whose administrative district the municipality in which the natural person whose civil registry document is concerned was born, married, died or entered into a registered partnership falls.
In the case of birth, marriage or partnership, entry into a registered partnership or death abroad of a Czech citizen , the civil registry document shall be issued by the Office of the Brno-střed Municipal District, Special Registry Office .
In the event of the loss of a birth, marriage, death certificate or registered partnership document, the civil registry office may issue a copy thereof. The original is also the issued copy (same copy) of the civil registry document.
You can also apply for a civil registry document electronically via a data box or by e-mail with a recognised electronic signature. The document in paper form will be sent to the acknowledgement of receipt into your own hands; in the case of a stay abroad, it is also possible to choose delivery to the embassy of the Czech Republic.

They may apply for a civil status document:
- the natural persons concerned by the registration, their spouses, partners, parents, children, grandparents, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings and authorised representatives;
- state authorities of the Czech Republic or bodies of territorial self-governing units for official use,
- statutory bodies of churches or clergy authorized by them, in the case of registers kept by these churches until 31. 12. 1949,
- natural persons who prove that it is necessary for the exercise of their rights before the state authorities of the Czech Republic or before the authorities of territorial self-governing units,
- persons who prove that this is necessary to assert legal claims abroad.

What you need if you are using this service
The service may be partially completed electronically.
Step 1
You can apply for a civil registry document electronically via a data box or by e-mail with a recognised electronic signature.
The registry office will ask you to pay the administrative fee by transfer and will provide you with the account number and payment details.
Once the fee has been paid, the document in paper form will be sent to you on delivery in your own hands; as well as abroad within the EU, if the service is available in the country. It is also possible to choose delivery to the embassy of the Czech Republic.
Step 2
In case of doubt, which registry office keeps the register in which the birth, marriage, entry into a registered partnership or death is registered, any registry office or regional office shall provide the necessary information.
Step 3
If the civil status document is to be used abroad within the European Union, the civil status office will also issue, at your request, a multilingual standard form drawn up in accordance with directly applicable European Union legislation.

Your application will be forwarded to the registry office where your birth (or the birth of the person whose birth certificate you are applying for) was registered.
The Registry Office will ask you to pay the administrative fee by transfer to the Office's account and will provide you with the account number and payment details.
If you apply for the issue of a civil registry document of another natural person, the civil registry office will also ask you to prove compliance with the legal conditions for the issue of a civil registry document.
After paying the administrative fee, your birth certificate will be delivered to you in the manner you have chosen in your application.
It will take you around 10 minutes to apply to the Registry Office.
How much will you pay
- You will pay an administrative fee of CZK 300 for issuing a civil status document.
- You will pay an administrative fee of CZK 100 for issuing a multilingual standard form.
- You will pay the administrative fee by bank transfer to the registry office's bank account.

What you need if you are using this service
In order to issue the civil status document, you will submit:
- an application for the issue of a civil status document;
- identity card;
- where applicable, a document proving that the requested civil status document relates to members of your family;
- if applicable, a document proving that it is necessary for the exercise of your rights before the state authorities of the Czech Republic or before the authorities of territorial self-governing units,
- where applicable, documents proving that you are asserting a legal claim in proceedings before an authority of a foreign State and that the assertion of a legal claim is actually dependent on the provision of a civil status document;
- power of attorney, if you apply through an agent (signature of the power of attorney must be officially verified).

- In case of doubt, which registry office keeps the register in which the birth, marriage, entry into a registered partnership or death is registered, any registry office or regional office shall provide the necessary information.
- The civil registry office sends the civil registry document to the person entitled on the acknowledgment of receipt into his own hands, or through the embassy of the Czech Republic abroad, or issues it to the applicant in person upon presentation of a valid identity document.
- If the civil status document is to be used abroad within the European Union, the civil status office shall also issue, at the request of a natural person, a multilingual standard form drawn up in accordance with directly applicable European Union legislation to accompany the civil status document.
- The application may also be submitted through the embassy of the Czech Republic abroad, in which case the relevant fee will be collected by the embassy.
How much will you pay
- You will pay an administrative fee of CZK 300 for the issue of a birth, marriage or death certificate or a registered partnership document.
- You will pay an administrative fee of CZK 100 for issuing a multilingual standard form.
- When processing the application in person, you pay an administrative fee in cash on site. In the latter case, by transfer to a bank account or postal order .

For example, you can apply for an identity card or travel document by presenting your birth certificate .
Appeal options
If the application is rejected, you can lodge an appeal within 15 days from the date of its delivery through the registry office that issued the decision.
Legislation
Sanctions
You will commit an offence if:
- intentionally destroy or damage documents issued by the registry office;
- you intentionally give false or incomplete information to the registry office.
The registry office may impose a fine of up to CZK 10,000 for an offence.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the office usually process my application and what is the legal deadline for processing it?
The Registry Office is required to take a decision on the application within 30 days. In particularly complex cases, it shall take a decision within a maximum of 60 days.
Usually the application is processed within 3 weeks.
