Classification in the preparatory grade of a special elementary school

Main information

In the preparatory stage of the special primary school, children are educated :

• moderately and severely mentally disabled,
• with concurrent impairment of multiple defects; or
• with autism.

A child may be placed in a special elementary school preparatory class from the school year in which he or she reaches the age of five to the start of compulsory education, up to a maximum of three school years. 

Child placement is also possible during the school year.

The inclusion of a child in the preparatory grade of a special primary school is decided by the headmaster of the school:

• at the request of the legal representative; and
• on the basis of a written recommendation from a special education centre.

1. You are the parent of a child with moderate or severe mental disability, multiple disabilities or autism.
2. You sought the help of a special education centre, which recommended special education in the preparatory stage of primary school in the recommendation for the education of the child in order to prepare and adapt to the transition to compulsory schooling.

When to use this service

A child from the school year in which he or she reaches the age of 5 to the start of compulsory schooling, even during the school year, may be included in the special preparatory grade of primary school.

The application shall be submitted upon receipt of the written recommendation of the Special Education Centre.

Inclusion of a child in a special elementary school preparatory grade can be solved in the nearest special pedagogical centre for children with intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders or concurrent disabilities with multiple disabilities.

A special pedagogical centre can also be set up directly at a special primary school.

The application is submitted by the legal representative to the headmaster of a special primary school, at which a preparatory degree is established.
