During secondary school, it is possible to change the field of education for personal, health or other reasons.
A change in the field of education is possible provided that the secondary school educates in more fields and the change is allowed by the headmaster of the school.
It is therefore not a pupil's entitlement, but the possibility of changing the field of education to address, for example, interest preferences or to promote other employability.
This option is given in all years of study, regardless of the form of education (daily, evening, distance and combined).
As part of the decision to change the field of education, the headmaster of the school may set the examination as a condition for allowing the student to change the field of education and determine its content, scope, date and criteria for its evaluation.
This examination must be taken by the pupil before the decision to change the field of education is taken, since it is only on the basis of this decision that the headmaster of the school decides.
When changing the field of education, the condition of the necessity of the pupil's medical fitness is maintained if the new field of education requires it.

The reasons for changing the field of education can be varied and are not limited by law, examples can be given:
- A high school student is studying in the field of education with a graduation exam. During his first year, his performance deteriorates to such an extent that he is concerned about whether he will graduate. Because he is manually skilled and the secondary school has several fields of education with a teaching certificate, he will use the opportunity to change the field and in the third year he will get a teaching certificate.
- A high school student is studying at a four-year grammar school. During his second year of study, he falls ill and has problems in mathematics and chemistry. On the contrary, the benefit in the Czech language and other humanities subjects, despite the illness, is still good. The secondary school also has a field of education with a school-leaving examination social activity, which seems more suitable for the pupil with regard to the completion of studies and its application.

However, in the final year of education, the change of discipline is problematic due to the different content of education between the two disciplines and the deadline for applying for the maturitní zkouška exam by 1 December.
However, changes to the profile tests in the event of a change in the field of education may be made until 16 May.
A change of field of study can also be combined in this case with inclusion in a lower year of education.
