Entering the birth of a child in the book of births serves to record children born in the Czech Republic and to record the birth of Czech citizens abroad.
The birth of a child in the Czech Republic is registered by the registry office at the place of birth of the child.
The birth of a Czech citizen abroad is registered by the municipal office of the Brno-střed district (special register).
Based on the entry in the birth register, a birth certificate is issued (usually) to the child's parents. This is a document evidencing the birth of a child, its name and surname and who its parents are.
Births of children born in health care facilities, or born with the assistance of a doctor, are reported by these health care facilities or the doctor.

When recording the birth of a child in the register of births (a process following the reporting of a birth) you will prove your identity as a parent (at least one of you) (by presenting valid proof of identity – identity card, travel document, foreigner's residence card).
If the child was born in a health care facility and the mother was identified by this facility, you do not have to appear in person at the registry office for registration if you have provided the registry office with all the data needed to register the child's birth (these can also be sent by post or via the health care facility where the child was born).
In the case where the child was born outside a health care facility, to record the birth of a child the registry office must identify at least one of the parents (on the basis of a submitted identity document).
To record the birth of a child, you will also provide:
1. for a child born during a marriage
2. in the case of a child born outside marriage for whom paternity has been established
3. in the case of a child born outside of marriage, whose father is not known, declaration of the child's name or names,

In case of errors in the register or birth certificate you can request its correction and the issue of a corrected birth certificate (free of charge).
For failure to issue a birth certificate within the statutory deadlines (30 days from notification of the birth) you can apply for measures against inactivity to the superior regional authority.For failure to notify the birth of a child, you maybe fined for the offence if you had a notification obligation. The fine can be a maximum of CZK 10,000.
