Application for authorisation to continue primary education

Main information

The parent (or the child's legal representative) has the possibility to apply to the headmaster for permission to continue primary education after the completion of the pupil's compulsory school attendance, but no later than the end of the school year in which the pupil reaches the age of 18.

This is the case if the pupil repeated the year once or twice and after 9 years of compulsory schooling is in less than 9 years, or did not repeat and the 9th year did not finish successfully.

A pupil with special educational needs may, in exceptional cases, be permitted by the headmaster to continue primary education until the end of the school year in which the pupil reaches the age of twenty, or, in the case of pupils undergoing special education in the primary school curriculum, until the age of twenty-six, with the consent of the founder.

This applies to you if

You are the legal representative of a pupil who has completed compulsory schooling but has not received primary education.

When to use this service

After completing compulsory education in lower than the ninth year of primary school or after unsuccessful completion of the ninth year of primary education.

What is the benefit of this service

A pupil who has completed compulsory nine years of schooling but has not obtained basic education (recurring year) for health or welfare reasons is allowed to continue basic education in order to obtain this level of education.

Although it is not compulsory to continue primary education after nine years of attendance, it enables the pupil to achieve primary education and thus to obtain better conditions for employment or, if necessary, to obtain a better qualification.

Appeal options

The decision can be appealed to the regional authority or the City of Prague through the school.
