Retraining

Losing a job can also be an opportunity. See what your options are.

Description of the service

Retraining means the acquisition of a new qualification and the upgrading, extension or deepening of an existing qualification, including its maintenance or renewal. Retraining is also considered to be the acquisition of a qualification for the employment of a natural person who has not yet obtained any qualification.

When determining the content and scope of retraining, it is based on your previous qualifications, health status, abilities and experience. Retraining takes the form of the acquisition of new theoretical and practical skills as part of continuing professional education.

The Labour Office of the Czech Republic can finance fully or partially three variants of retraining – those it provides by awarding a public contract, selected retraining and the last variant are retraining of employees who are at risk of losing their current job. For example, due to a change in business activity or a decline in one part of business activities.

The Labour Office of the Czech Republic can cover the costs of retraining (cursory fees) for you if you discuss retraining with it before the start of the retraining course and the Labour Office of the Czech Republic recommends such retraining.

In addition, the Labour Office of the Czech Republic may reimburse you for proven necessary costs associated with the retraining provided (e.g. travel expenses by public transport or insurance in case you cause damage during the retraining).

If, without serious reasons, you fail to complete your retraining or refuse to take up a suitable job, you are required to pay full retraining compensation.

There is no automatic entitlement to retraining. Retraining must be effective and demonstrably increase your chances of employment.

More information can be found on the website of the Labour Office of the Czech Republic.
This applies to you if
  • you are registered as an applicant or candidate for employment in the register of the Labour Office of the Czech Republic.

What is the difference between a job seeker and a job seeker?

The job seeker applies for a suitable job placement and is unemployed.

The job seeker is interested in job mediation and can work without restrictions. This option is suitable if, for example, you have a notice period or you are no longer satisfied with your current work.

When you have to deal with it

If you are on the register of jobseekers and job seekers and need to complete your qualification.

What you need for this
  • have qualifications for a given retraining course and exercise of the profession (e.g. relevant level of education, some knowledge and skills);
  • for some retrainings, a confirmation from your doctor that you are medically fit to take a retraining course and pursue a new profession is also required;
  • retraining must be needed – your current qualifications do not allow you to get a suitable job;
  • retraining must be effective – once completed, there is a real chance of getting a job;
  • in case of interest in the selected retraining, which you provide yourself, it is necessary to forward the completed form Interest in the selected retraining to the Labour Office of the Czech Republic in advance.
