Other consequences of gender reassignment

Gender reassignment has no bearing on a person’s status, personal circumstances or property.

It does, however, bring an end to the person’s marriage or registered partnership (see also above). The marriage or registered partnership of an individual (if they are in one) is dissolved on the date of gender reassignment. This is recorded in the register of marriages or the register of partnerships (the date indicated in the certificate of the completion of treatment is taken to be the date of dissolution). The new civil status of both the individual and their ex-spouse/partner is entered as 'dissolved marriage/partnership' in the population register information system.

The same legal provisions on the obligations and rights that divorced spouses have in relation to any children they have had together and on their economic obligations and rights following the divorce apply, with the necessary changes, to individuals whose marriage has been dissolved. A court decides, further to an application or on its own motion, on the childcare arrangements for each parent.
